Like most young men of the postwar era, Pierre-Just Marny (1943–2011), a Martinican man of humble origin, expected to reap the benefits of departmentalization. But in the late 1950s, against all expectations, he became an outlaw. In 1965, after committing violent crimes, he called himself La Panthère Noire (the Black Panther), a Hollywood-inspired name characterizing his courage and fearlessness. Marny, who has fallen through the cracks of French history, is an important historical subject because his adventures, killings, and struggle against the French police; his sentence to life in prison; and ultimately his struggle for freedom became intertwined with the complex relationship that Martinique has developed with France since departmentalization.
