The best source for study of any organization is usually its own records. Unfortunately, by accident or design, official documents of many of Revolutionary Jacobin clubs have vanished.' Historians of these societies have typically based their writings on printed materials that, happily, clubs produced and distributed in vast quantities. The most notable type of Jacobin publication was newspaper. Several journals, including Journal des debats des amis de la constitution seante aux Jacobins a Paris, reported debates and correspondence of mother society in Paris.2 Some provincial clubs also printed official gazettes; others sponsored papers written by authorized members.3 The nerve center of Jacobin propaganda in southeastern France was Club of rue Thubaneau in Marseille, the largest and most active patriotic society in Midi.4 This society and its membership published a half-dozen journals between 1790-94, but only one, Journal des departe
