Historians of the French Second Republic habitually fix upon June 1848 as the turning point in the mid-century revolution.1 In their accounts the revolution usually proceeds in a descending line from a high point in February through the setbacks of April 16, 23, and May 15 to a quietus in June.2 What remains of the Republic after June is invariably treated as prolegomenon to the Second Empire. Several major recent works have noted a resurgence of democ-soc radicalism3 after 1848 not only in the cities, but especially in the countryside. Dealing mainly with the repression that eliminated organized radicalism from all but its rural retrenchments, these books still focus on the coup d'etat of December 185 1.4 While social historians have looked at the Republic from a regional standpoint,5
