The Boulanger Affair Revisited

The Boulanger affair was perhaps the most serious of the many political crises that endangered the French Third Republic before the Second World War. Understandably, therefore, it has given rise to a substantial and, in many ways, impressive historiography. General Boulanger's life and thought have been explored in the writings of Adrien Dansette, Frederick Seager, and James Harding.' The character of the Boulangist movement has been carefully assessed in Seager's study and in important books or articles by Zeev Sternhell, Rene Remond, Patrick Hutton, and Paul Mazgaj.2 William Irvine and, to a lesser extent, Philippe Levillain have analyzed the covert alliance that developed between Boulanger and French royalists.3 Michael Burns has examined the impact of Boulangism on the French countryside.4 For all its excellence, however, this is a rather one-sided historiography. The republican politicians who, after all, emerged triumphant from the Boulanger crisis have been considered much less systematically. Who exactly were these republicans? How and why did they
