The Bibliotheque de l'Arsenal is peculiar among Paris libraries in being a general and at the same time a highly specialized library. Its holdings contain one of the richest and most diversified collections of books, manuscripts, and prints in many fields dating back to the Middle Ages. Since the end of the nineteenth century, acquisitions have been restricted almost exclusively to literature and the fine arts, and the Arsenal has become the chief depository of manuscripts and publications relating to the history of the French stage, particularly in recent and contemporary times
