Despite the major contributions to science made in France in the seventeenth century and her preeminence in many departments of science in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, French science has not received the attention which might have been expected from historians of France. French educators and politicians have too often been content with ill-informed generalities about the importance of great Frenchmen like Lavoisier or Pasteur, whereas French historians have often regarded science as a separate field, fortified by insurmountable technicalities against encroachment by all except the initiated. Certainly to appreciate properly the importance of, say, Cauchy to the calculus or de Broglie to quantum physics, is the prerogative of a few; yet there is much relating to science in France over the last three-and-a-half centuries which is
