IN AN earlier paper,l a condensed version of which was read at the Conference of the Institute in January I965, it was suggested that the concept of the community, in both biological and sociological contexts, should be of major importance in geography. In the discussion which took place at the Conference, one of the more important criticisms was that no examples had been provided of the application of the concept to teaching and research. The purpose of this paper is to provide some suggestions for the application of the concept in research work in order to clarify and reinforce the theoretical arguments presented earlier
