The aim of this paper is to question why environmental disruption occurs in a state-owned, centrally planned country like Czechoslovakia, and what attempts have been made to solve its implications. Mismanagement of the environment on a national scale serves as an introduction to a closer examination of how and where the Czechs have misused three of their major resources, namely air, water and soil/vegetation. Examples are given from specific areas, and data provided on dust fallout, emission of SO2, water demands and river pollution; over-intensive use of artificial fertilizers, high noise levels and nuclear waste problems are also discussed. The nation's health is being impaired by all these developments. Discussion then centres on the state's attempts to reverse this situation; the results of agricultural land reclamation and legal measures taken by the Czechoslovakian authorities against pollution since 1960, are outlined. In conclusion, several warnings are sounded about signs of overall environmental deterioration in the country. Unless stricter controls, tighter decision-making and greater respect for the state's natural resources are made, then the country's environmental future appears bleak. Post-war socialist experience in Czechoslovakia has, so far, provided no more positive answers to environmental problems than other countries under differing political systems
