The character of urban development in southern Italy is a function of the dualistic development of the post-war Italian economy which has resulted in a concentration of finance and industry in the north and hyper-urbanization in the south. The fundamental importance of property capital, combined with the prevailing political philosophy and lax planning practices produce, in the south Italian city, a unique example of the unfettered process of capitalist urbanization. This paper first examines the general processes of accumulation and urbanization in Italy, then considers the particular case of sociospatial development in the city of Naples
