At the annual conference of the Institute in January 1986, held at the University of Reading, the History and Philosophy of Geography Study Group organized a symposium on the subject of 'The Unity of Geography', at which four papers were presented and discussed. Given the importance of the topic, it has been decided to publish the four papers, plus the Chairman's Introduction and a summary of the Discussion, in the Transactions. Readers can thereby appreciate the full context of the individual papers, and can respond to them as a whole as well as a set of parts
