Although there have been several studies of variations in economic, social and environmental conditions throughout Britain, little is known about how these relate to public satisfaction with different areas. Using data from the National Dwelling and Housing Survey this study examines spatial variations in public satisfaction and dissatisfaction with areas of residence. It is shown that satisfaction tends, in part, to reflect the socio-economic conditions of different areas. However, there is a stronger tendency for satisfaction to be greater in more rural than more urban counties, even after socio-economic differences have been taken into account
