This brief paper is a sequel to two previous Transactions articles concerned with climate change. The first addressed the topic of global climate and sea-level change and the implications for development (Warrick and Farmer, 1990), and the second focused on scenarios of climate change for the United Kingdom (Warrick and Barrow, 1991). In this commentary, the subject of international strategies for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and their climatic effects is introduced. Several simple analyses of hypothetical strategies for emission reductions are conducted which suggest that a substantial slowing of projected climate and sea-level change will require measures much more drastic than those being seriously considered in international forums
