This paper examines the degree of social segregation within public sector housing for one housing authority using 1971 Census Small Area Statistics. This was found to be less than that existing in the private sector, but a definite and regular pattern of segregation was discovered. In particular a concentration of households in the semi-skilled, personal service and unskilled categories was found in estates built in the 1930s under slum clearance and overcrowding legislation. An attempt was also made to measure the distribution of multiple deprivation in the authority's housing stock, and this was also found to be concentrated in estates built during the 1930s. Some tentative hypotheses are put forward to explain the observed patterns of segregation
