This paper provides a descriptive analysis of the nature, intensity and distribution of deprivation in rural Scotland. Consideration of the relationship between rural restructuring and deprivation is followed by examination of key conceptual and methodological issues and identification of the socio-economic characteristics of rural Scotland. A combination of univariate and multivariate empirical analyses, undertaken at several geographic scales, illuminates the differential incidence of deprivation. Policy-related issues are considered and several questions identified for further research
