A survey of English pre-industrial urban occupations is undertaken, including a discussion of available sources and the problems encountered in their use. Ways of ordering occupational information gathered from multifarious sources for analytical and comparative purposes are examined. The major classifications are shown to fall into two main categories, namely 'type-of-product' and 'type-of-work'. A 'type-of-work' classification is advanced as most suitable for comparative studies of the occupational structures of pre-industrial towns.
