The altitudes and orientations of eighty-four corries in northern Snowdonia, Wales, are qualitatively and quantitatively described. They occur at heights ranging between 238 m and 837 m, with a mean at 496-6 m. Regression surfaces fitted to the data indicate a distinct upward regional trend in corrie altitude from south-west to north-east at 13-3 m/km which may reflect a past climatic gradient. The corries are dominantly orientated towards the north- east. It is concluded that more needs to be known about the links between climate and present-day glacierization before these observations can be used to reconstruct palaeoclimatic conditions. IT is often suggested that the study of the distribution and orientation of fossil corrie (cirque) landforms enables inferences to be made about the factors that control mountain glaciation.1 These have included the pre-glacial relief,2 geological structure,3 glacial history4 and the regional climate.5 In an attempt to identify which of these factors is the most important the present work analyses and describes significant regularities in the distribution and orientation of the corries in northern Snowdonia, Wales
