A longer version of this paper was presented at the Standing Conference on Psychoanalytical Intracultural and Intercultural Dialogue (Paris 1998)focused on temporality in French culture. Andr Green (1998)presented his concept of temps clat. In the intercultural dialogue, it became clear that the concept of aprs‐coup characterised the French approach to temporality. Pier‐Luigi Rossi (1998) gave a remarkably clear account of that Conference. The present shorter version was written at the beginning of 2003 and the answer to Igns Sodr was written in September 2003. I have added the denition by Laplanche of aprs‐coup (2002); my translationNotes1.
