I think more about teaching than anything else; I wonder if it is healthy. Whether it is healthy or not, I feel compelled to sort through the hot, cold, spare, full, hopeful, dispairing, particular, and general thoughts I have about teaching and share them with others. There are days when I feel Paul Goodman's statement that “teaching is largely a delusion” is a wise insight. Mostly, however, I find myself closer to Piaget, who believes teaching is possible if addressed to students in the right order and in the right moments. What follows is an account of my efforts to find some order in the moments I spend with my students
