The article by Lillis and Tonkovich in a recent issue of the Journal of Higher Education [2] discusses the impact upon a regional economy of the of grant and contract research services by a university. The basic notion is that externally financed grant and contract research expenditures have, via a multiplier, a magnified effect upon the income flow and employment levels of the surrounding community. The article contains several substantive errors, which we wish to point out in the hope that their repetition elsewhere may be avoided. The analysis of the impact of university expenditures financed from imported grant and research money is founded on the export theory of economic growth. The particular model used to analyze the export of Washington State University (wsu) grant and contract services is a regionalized Leontief input-output system. Multipliers from the input-output model for the state of Washington [1] are used to estimate the income and employment impact of wsu grant and contract expenditures upon the economy of the state
