Among the Annang of southeastern Nigeria one of the principal secret societies is Ebie-owo, the traditional warriors' association. Members regularly invoke Awassi Ekong, the god of war, and the term ekong is also used to refer to the association's various performances. A useful description of Ebieowo is given in Jill Salmons' paper on the patchwork and applique cloths that are hung in commemorative shrines (ngwomo) erected for deceased chiefs and elders (Salmons 1980).
