L'etude menee de 1984 a1986 dans la Province Est de la Zambie montre que les Chewa de Kaliza organisent des rituels initiatiques propres aux hommes et aux femmes. Les jeunes garcons, Nyau, portent des masques de plumes, de bois ou un masque corporel representant un animal sauvage pour eviter que les femmes et les enfants sachent que c'est un homme. Pendant que les femmes s'occupent de la biere, les Nyau participent aux ceremonies mortuaires et sont inities. Quant aux jeunes filles puberes, elles participent aux cinamwali durant lesquelles elles sont initiees a leur role de femme et de mere
