The cabinets of curiosities formed in Italy during the last centuries are rich sources for those in search of objects bearing witness to non-European cultures of the past. As examples of African art recovered from these collections come to light, they continually reveal new and puzzling aspects. At present, our information concerning certain pieces is fragmentary and often contradictory. However, when the results of separate investigations are accumulated, the elements may fit together like the pieces of a mosaic, revealing unexpected and significant connections.
