n 1965, a bronze pedestal stool was collected at Ijebu-Ode, western Nigeria, by Denis Williams for the University of Ife Institute of African Studies Museum. Various provenances have been suggested for this stool: Oyo (Thurstan Shaw and Babatunde Lawal); Owo (William Fagg), and Benin (Ojo 1974a:332). After comparing it to Benin examples illustrated in Ling Roth's Great Benin, Its Customs, Arts and Horrors (1903), Denis Williams (1974:251266) stated categorically, partly on the basis of evidence from the vendor, that the
