Work-study programs for potential dropouts rest on assumptions about the value of work in improving adolescent motivation and adjustment. Data from recently completed research by the author on urban, early school-leavers raises serious questions concerning these assumptions. Many new programs are not designed either to test specific hypotheses or to differentiate the effect of diverse program factors. The assumptions underlying work-study for potential dropouts and the need to refine criteria for judging the effectiveness of such programs are discussed
