Women's movement publications have raised searching questions in the field of child care and development. Five specific propositions are identified that are common to the movement and that relate specifically to this field. These concern roles of the nuclear family and the biological mother in influencing development; imposition of gender role and its effects on the child; and the relative values of individual or communal methods of child rearing. Recent books are surveyed, and it is concluded that most texts in this field show a lack of responsiveness to the issues so widely discussed
