Since the hospitalization of children in a psychiatrically oriented children's hospital will often bring about a remission in symptomatology, we have used such hospitalization as a therapeutic and diagnostic tool with emotionally disturbed children. When there is a question whether a symptom is organic or psychogenic, the hospitalization of the child allows for another dimension of observation in clarifying the nature of the illness. Children who are in need of temporary removal from their homes can be hospitalized on a pediatric ward and psychotherapeutic work can then be undertaken to alleviate some of the more serious symptomatology before long-term work in some other setting is begun. This is particularly true of such disorders as psychogenic vomiting, ulcerative colitis and severe bronchial asthma
