Five groups of undergraduate men and women have participated in an ongoing experimental program designed to give those who may some day be in decision-making positions the experience of ghetto living. Students lived and worked in a black ghetto for a semester; groups were kept small. Typically, students entered the program with enthusiasm and idealism, departed with greater awareness of the complexities of ghetto problems, their idealism dampened. This paper describes the developmental process of the groups, and discusses implications of the program
