Published studies of work “therapy” in which work output was used as a measure of patient behavior are reviewed. Usefulness of the method is stressed and some technical points in measurement discussed. The use and limitations of work performance as a guide to prognosis are outlined. Doubts about the extent of the therapeutic effect of work “therapy” are expressed and illustrated by conflicting results in the literature
