Using data from a survey of divorced and separated men and women, this study suggests that family help is less likely to be provided when the families are themselves experiencing life change events or disapprove of the divorce decision. Family help does tend to be forthcoming, however, when respondents are simultaneously undergoing other life stressors in addition to the divorce experience
