Patterns of partially blocked verbal communication are identified as duplicity, a term of Kaiser's which is here defined and applied to casework. A number of illustrative maneuvers by clients has been collected. These are here grouped according to the two proximate aims: escaping responsibility for one's words and controlling the interview. Suggestions are offered for helping the client yield these ultimately unsatisfying ways of coping with the fear of loneliness
