Between 1964 and 1970, a committee of the American Orthopsychiatric Association was concerned with the development of a standard classification of psychosocial functioning. A 1970 annual meeting Workshop focused on objectives, concepts and problems of such a classification, its uses for case management and epidemiology, and professional training considerations. This paper summarizes the issues and offers the author's views on the current “state-of-the-art” and the overriding need for a classification. Five of the workshop papers, prepared by participants as pre-commentaries, are presented following the paper
