'The archaeology states clearly to me that ancestral Polynesians journeyed quite quickly from eastern Indonesia through to Polynesia in the second millennium B.C. The linguistic evidence suggests that the Polynesian languages have an ancestry dating from about 3000 B.C. in Melanesia. There is obvious conflict here, and it will hopefully be resolved in the near future'?P. S. Bellwood, Man's Conquest of the Pacific (London 1978)
