GENERALLY SPEAKING, there has been very limited development of systems for uniform reporting of significant dimensions of ambulatory care services. Except for volume of visits by medical specialty per unit time, no measure of clinic activity or performance has been adopted to enable valid comparison among separate institutions. Occasionally, individual institutions conduct special internal studies of their clinic operations; while the results are useful for program development and administration, it is seldom possible to utilize findings for comparison with other institutions or within the same institution at separate time intervals
