The following is the full text of the address delivered to the American Association for the Advancement of Science in New York on December 27, 1960, by C. P. Snow, famous British scientist and novelist. We print it in MR because much of what it says is equally relevant to the social sciences; because we have not seen the entire text published anywhere else; and because we want every MR reader to have it and to use it. We know of no document which is better calculated to arouse not only scientists but all citizens to a sense of the dangers and responsibilities—and also the potentialities—which confront all of us at this crucial juncture of world history. —The EditorsThis article can also be found at the Monthly Review website, where most recent articles are published in full.Click here to purchase a PDF version of this article at the Monthly Review website
