What was Solidarity's relation to socialism? I ask the question because it has been a source of confusion not only to Western leftists who were embarrassed at the sudden growth of a trade union of protest in a supposedly "socialist" state, but also because neither Solidarity nor its individual members were too clear about the answer. When pushed to make statements, Solidarity leaders generally showed themselves to be somehow pro-American and anti-Soviet, but the details were never too clear. This article can also be found at the Monthly Review website, where most recent articles are published in full.Click here to purchase a PDF version of this article at the Monthly Review website
