"A little news item from Lima, Peru, tells a potentially big story," begins an editorial in the New York Times of November 15th. "It is about Indian peasants—8,000 of them—in the old Inca capital of Cuzco, high in the Andes, clashing with the police." The following article tells what is behind that little news item. The author is one of Peru's outstanding writers, having twice received the National Prize of the Theater of Peru (1947 and 1951) and once the National Prize of Journalism. In 1961, he was awarded the Leon de Greiff Hispanic-American Poetry Prize in Caracas, Venezuela. He is co-director of the weekly Libertad, organ of the Peruvian Social-Progressive movement. —The EditorsThis article can also be found at the Monthly Review website, where most recent articles are published in full.Click here to purchase a PDF version of this article at the Monthly Review website
