Seeing Japan in perspective means two things: first, considering present-day Japan in the context of the country's own history; and second, placing it in relation to the post-Second World War global economy. Both are very large and complicated subjects in dealing with which it is all too easy to get lost among the trees and forget about the forest as a whole. My main qualification for venturing into the field at all is that, lacking specialized knowledge of the trees, I am perhaps less likely than experts to be diverted from concentrating on the forest. This article can also be found at the Monthly Review website, where most recent articles are published in full.Click here to purchase a PDF version of this article at the Monthly Review website
