These notes are being written in Cambodia, in March, 1965. Bangkok airport as I passed through was shrill with American jet-fighters; on the observation deck of the airport a small group of United States officers was watching the planes disappear into the heat-hazed skies of late spring. The atmosphere is heavy and the voices of the Thai air-hostesses tense; soon the storms of summer will sweep across Southeast Asia. Beyond the eastern frontier of Cambodia, the United States is steadily escalating the South Vietnamese war; massive air attacks against targets north of the 17th parallel are under way. This article can also be found at the Monthly Review website, where most recent articles are published in full.Click here to purchase a PDF version of this article at the Monthly Review website
