"People at the State Department told us: 'If El Salvador has a revolution, then the Mexican oilfields 150 miles away will be hit by revolution: we can't permit either." These words were spoken by Enrique Alvarez Cordoba, president of the Salvadoran Democratic Revolutionary Front, in an address at Riverside Church, New York City, in late August 1980. Three months later, he and other Front leaders were kidnapped and assassinated in San Salvador. This article can also be found at the Monthly Review website, where most recent articles are published in full.Click here to purchase a PDF version of this article at the Monthly Review website
