This is a translation of a pamphlet entitled "Ueber den Verfall des Feudalismus und das Aufkommen der Bourgeoisie," published in East Germany in 1953. The translator is John K. Dickinson. The publisher explains in a preliminary note that it was found among Engels' posthumous papers, a fragment without title or date. The single footnote, referring to a book published in 1874, would seem to fix the earliest possible date. So far as we know, this is the first time the essay has been published in English. This article can also be found at the Monthly Review website, where most recent articles are published in full.Click here to purchase a PDF version of this article at the Monthly Review website
