For years the concept of status inconsistency (SI) has held the imagination of numerous American sociologists. As an explicitly nonvertical aspect of social stratification, it appeared to add a new and potentially valuable dimension to sociological analysis. However, the existing research literature has come under increasingly heavy fire for its methodological and theoretical shortcomings.
