A Cross-Cultural Test of the Size-Density Hypothesis

cross-cultural test of an hypothesis derived from an earlier work (Stephan, 1972) which dealt with the size of counties in the United States as a whole, from 1790 to the present. In that work, the size of counties was shown to be inversely related to the intensity of settlement (population density) in the region in which counties were located. The of segmental growth developed to explain the relationship was based on Durkheim's (1933) theory of the division of labor in society and on two recent geopolitical theories suggested by Boulding (1968) and Stinchcombe (1968). The size-density hypothesis was subsequently tested internationally, using data on the primary political divisions of 98 countries (Stephan, 1972); results showed that the relationship obtained in nearly all countries, excepting those whose boundaries had become fixed by tradition prior to major population shifts at later dates.
