As the archaeological study of use-wear analysis matures, its contributions to the reconstrnction of prehistoric economic activities, subsistence strategies and lifeways becomes more significant. The present study was initiated to provi e an analysis of the lithic use-wear features diagnostic of bison hide processing. The present study entails 1) an ethnographic overview of the Plains Indian bison hide processing technologies; 2) a comparison of the tools ethnographically associated with bison hide processing to artifacts from the Plains archaeological record; 3) an experimental application of Plains hide processing technology using replicated prehistoric tools; and 4) a comparison of the use-wear on the experimental endscrapers to the use-wear described by other experimental studies
