Analysis of artifacts from a Fort Lamed, Kansas, officer's latrine indicates that the socio-economic status of persons depositing the material culture can be ascertained. In this case, status is defined by ceramic shape, glassware styles, and a diversity of other cultural material. It is postulated that status-related artifacts functioned on an ideological level for their owners, becoming symbols of the mainstream Victorian American society from which personnel in frontier military stations were physically isolated
