Dog Eating And Pre-Horse Adaptation On The High Plains

Examination of the documents using the tenn “Dog Eater” (Charitica, phonetically /Sam rikka/) suggests that, contrary to the accepted view, the name was not restricted to the Arapahos, but included some Athapaskan as well. This suggests that the tenn Chariticas was, at first, a general one applied by Shoshone an speakers, when beginning their dispersal onto the Plains, to people of “Plains-like” adaptation (i.e., adaptation[s] different than that of the Shoshoneans) with whom they immediately came into contact. On the northern and central parts of the western Plains, the Shoshones and Comanches found both some Athapaskan and the Arapahos, whom they characterized as “Dog Eaters.” The hypothesis is advanced that dog eating had crucial adaptive significance to (at least) the late prehistoric and early historic pedestrian nomads of the High Plains. There is a need to test this hypothesis archaeologically, but such testing will be difficult
