In 1855 and 1856, military surveyor Gouverneur K. Warren and his assistants produced what were at the time the most accurate maps ever made of the Missouri River. This series of sketch maps contains a wealth of information about environmental conditions and cultural features along the river at this time and powerfully supplements other cartographic and documentary sources about the river’s history. This paper discusses a few of the cultural features depicted in the maps, including representative examples of all feature types and some of the more interesting or unusual items
