This paper describes excavations carried out in 1981 at the site of the officers’ quarters at Fort Madison, a military post built in 1808-09 at the location of the present city of Fort Madison, Iowa. These excavations sought to clarify conflicting evidence relating to the foundation measurements of one of the fort buildings. The 1981 excavations also elucidated the later history of the site and provided more accurate archaeological indications than had hitherto been available for dating various artifacts previously recovered from the site
