The Fort Towson sutler's store and residence existed on the eastern Oklahoma frontier between 1832 and 1854. To understand the relation of this site to Oklahoma's Antebellum frontier, a spatial perspective is developed which compares the Fort Towson sutler's store to other sites within eastern Oklahoma and to sites in other areas on the basis of the site's total artifact pattern and ceramic structure. Observed differences between eastern Oklahoma sites and those on the eastern seaboard, as reflected in total artifact frequencies, are explained by differentials in time and space. Analyses of ceramic patterning reveal a distinct spatial pattern in eastern Oklahoma that is felt to reflect not only differences in ceramic cost but also differentials in trade, transportation, and communication within the area during the Antebellum Period
