Modeling Subsistence Strategies In The Forest/Grassland Transition Zone Of Western Manitoba During The Late Prehistoric And Early Historic Periods

The ecological relationship between archaeological cultures and their environments is of interest to archaeologists attempting to reconstruct past lifeways and processual developments in prehistoric huntergatherer societies. Research over the past several years has resulted in the collection of data which has facilitated the development and testing of four subsistence strategy models. The models articulate environmental resources with patterns of mobility and socio-cultural ‘risk reducing strategies’. Three ethnohistoric and three archaeological cultures which inhabited the Forest/Grassland Transition Zone of Western Manitoba are used to test the applicability of the models. The subsistence strategies of all groups can be accounted for within the limits of the four models
