The Deerfly site (39LM39) is located on the west bank of Lake Francis Case (Missouri River) in south-central South Dakota. This site was excavated in 1953 by the University of Kansas as part of the Interagency Archeological Salvage Program and is located within an area surveyed by the University of Kansas in 1983 under contract with the Omaha District Corps of Engineers. The Deerfly site is demonstrated to have been occupied by Dakota peoples during the last two decades ofthe nineteenth century. The Dakota assemblage from the Deerfly site is interpreted as the by-product of rapid economic change. At the same time, however, this site demonstrates the existence of a resilient Dakota cultural pattern during this period of early reservation settlement
